A Vernier caliper is a precision measuring tool used for highly accurate linear measurements, capable of determining dimensions like outer diameter, inner diameter, and depth, far more precisely than a standard ruler by using a sliding scale (vernier scale) to read fractions of the main scale’s smallest division. Key to its accuracy is the vernier scale, a secondary set of markings on a sliding jaw that allows for interpolation, typically down to 0.02 mm or 0.001 inch, by finding the one line that perfectly aligns between the main scale and the vernier scale.
